When a singer makes a record, they only make it once, but every time somebody buys that record, even if it's years later, they get a royalty payment.
You could look at it as if you were a waiter or waitress. Every time you wait on a table, you get a tip. What if every time you waited on a table, the people came in every month after that to give you a tip for waiting on them that one time. Obviously your income would go up every month, and you'd get paid whether you were working or not.
